Niello Definition

Niello is a black metallic alloy of sulphur mixed with copper, silver, or lead. It is used for metal decorations, to fill designs that are engraved or etched on metal surfaces. Niello decorated objects are called nielli. During the late Iron Age, niello decoration was widely spread in Europe. Such decoration is commonly seen in Anglo-Saxon, Celtic, and several variety of Medieval jewellery.
