Namban Definition

Namban is found in Japanese art. It refers to images of foreigners like southern barbarians, European missionaries and traders. Namban art developed in Japan in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The paintings brought to Japan by the Europeans were also referred to as Namban Art.
