Cross Barrel Vault Definition

A barrel vault is an architectural element, which means a tunnel vault or wagon vault formed by the extrusion of single curves which may be circular or semi-cylindrical in shape, along a given distance. Out of these barrels, if a main barrel is intersected at right angles at regular intervals with other barrels, then it may be called cross barrel vault. Early civilisations like ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia constructed such barrels.
