Chintz Definition

Chintz is a glazed calico textile, originally woodblock printed produced in India during 1600 to 1800. It is a popular textile in bed covers, draperies and quilts. Typically the designs feature flowers and similar patterns of various colors in plain light background. The fabric is considered as rare and extremely expensive. It was imported to various regions like England, France and Dutch Republic. It was a popular fabric in England in the 17th century. The term also has been used to refer the style of floral decoration on chintzware pottery and wallpaper.
