Alternating Figures Definition

Alternating figures are particular form of optical illusion. They are ambiguous images created to show how our brain continuously and automatically perceives most objects. An alternating image might be a normal image with one purposefully varied detail, which allows the viewer to see the image in an entirely different light. For example, one could take the two versions of the same image of a translucent, 3D cube, and in each version color a different side of the cube. The result will be a difference in the way the mind perceives where the cube is situated in space.
