Almohad Style Definition

The Almohad Dynasty was a very large Muslim dynasty that existed throughout the 12th and 13th centuries. At their peak, the Almohads controlled a large portion of northern Africa and southern Spain. The style of art produced by the culture was purposely simple, with straightforward geometric designs. Although the art and architecture became increasingly ornate over time, geometric designs are consistent throughout the existence of the dynasty. To the extent that Almohad art and architecture became more ornamental over time, the decorations were always systematically arranged in a notably schematic fashion.
