Thymol Definition

Thymol is a phenol and is isomeric with carvacrol. It is extracted from Thyme and other kinds of plants as a white crystalline substance. It has a pleasant aroma with strong antiseptic properties.
In Art, thymol is used as a fungicide to preserve books, cloth, art work and in starch paste adhesives .Fumigation of thymol crystals in humid conditions helps to prevent mold growth. However, extreme care should be undertaken when it is used to preserve books and art work. Thymol fumes attack and soften oil paints, varnishes, and some synthetic resins. It may also brittle parchment. Oil stains can appear if thymol crystal is in contact with paper.
