Relief Definition

In terms of art, relief refers to the projection of a sculpture from a flat surface. Reliefs are also called relievo. Relief combines the two dimensional pictorial art with the three dimensions of sculpture. There are three types of reliefs high, low and sunken. High relief stands out prominently from the background. In low relief the projection is bare. The projection in sunken relief appears sunk below the surface. The sharp outlines frame the sunken relief.
