Rabbet Definition

The term Rabbet refers to a groove along the edge on the back of a frame. This deep notch or a groove formed in the edge of a board, framing timber, etc., is to facilitate something else to be fitted into it. Rabbet space allows for the better protection and deeper placement of glass, mat, picture, etc. Rabbet might be produced tools like a rabbet plane or a router. In the context of art, Rabbet has importance in the making of picture frames which hold the artwork inside the rabbet space.
