Pug Mill Definition

The term Pug Mill refers to a machine or mill used to mix clay masses. Ceramics pug mills are commonly referred to as "pugs" are used to extrude clay bodies before the shaping process. A pug mill may be fitted with a vacuum system that makes sure that there is no entrapped air in the mixed clay masses. The Pug Mill has spinning blades that chop, mix, and de-air ceramic clay. Pug mills are made in different sizes. The pug mill is important in a ceramic studio as well as it is suitable in an elementary art classroom. It can be used to recycle clay that does not become earthenware on its first use. It is advantageous to use a pug mill to recycle clay for an art education program because pugging clay by hand is time consuming. Pug mills' design makes them safe and easy to be used by children in classrooms.
