Pate Sur Pate Definition

The term pate sur pate is a French word which means paste on paste. The concept of pate sur pate was developed in France when a ceramic manufacturing company tried to reproduce their technique on decorative art items after an accident took place in the company. But the technique was misconstrued and they produced a design different from that of the original and somehow perfected it which later came to known as pate-sur-pate. This kind of design includes painting with different layers of white coloured liquid clay with a painting brush on a ceramic piece of art and the technique was first introduced in 1850 in France.
