Metamorphosis refers to a marked change in the appearance or function, especially in the life cycle of insects. The transformation of pupa to caterpillar is an example of metamorphosis. It is a technique used in animation. Salvador Dali's  "Metamorphosis of Narcissus" (1937) is an example of metamorphosis in art.
