Intarsia Definition

Intarsia is a surface decorating technique that was developed during the Italian Renaissance. This technique is mainly used in wood works.  In this technique, outline drawings are used as templates for cutting out pieces, which are then shaped and finished. Later, the cut out pieces are glued to a wood backing. Various types of wood are used for this work, depending on the pattern and type of art. Sometimes stains, bleaches, or heat are applied on the wooden pieces to obtain a wide range of tints, tones, and shades. We can also see marble intarsia art works.
