Deckle edge means a paper with feathered edge. Deckle edges are rough and can be seen in handmade papers. Due to its roughness and featherlike structure, it is also called a called featheredge. Deckle edge was an inevitable part of the process of papermaking.  Deckle edge later evolved as a mark of status when smooth edge came into existence.
