Candy containers were used to store candies from the Victorian era.  They are collectible items now because of the variety of designs in them. As collectibles, initially glass containers were popular, rather than tin and papier-mache. Liberty Bell made in 1876 for sale at the Centennial Exposition is considered as the earliest glass container sold commercially.
