Black Figure Definition

The term Black Figure refers to a style of painting used in ancient Greek pottery, specifically in antique Greek vases. Black was one of the primary colors used by artists and it was mostly common during the 7th and 5th centuries BC. The black-figure painting technique mostly depicted animals and human silhouette figures in detail. There are more than 20,000 existing black figure vessels and they provide diverse representations of Greek mythology and other religious, social, and sporting practices.
