Bailey Definition

Bailey is a defensive wall bordering a castle. Traditionally, the bailey is the outermost wall.  The term may also refer to the area of ground, or courtyard, between the bailey and the inner walls of a castle. The bailey protects the castle from damage and attacks, and the courtyard provided a space in which armies could greatly outnumber attacking enemies.
