Adhesives Definition

Adhesives refers to materials like paste, glue and mastic that causes stickiness and have a capacity to join materials. The time for drying these adhesives can be reduced by raising the temperature up to 70º F. Since most adhesives are either toxic or hazardous, they use caution. They are very absorbent and hence two applications must be made in the endgrain surface. If adhesives are used in excess there is a chance for weakening of joints. It is always better to follow the instructions given on the pack. The different types of adhesives are hot glue, mucilage, rubber cement, epoxy, and silicone. Some adhesives are even available in spray forms. The nature of surface, temperature, flexibility, expense, setting time, toxic nature, water resistance are few factors that determine the choice of adhesive. Some adhesives are acid free and few are more reversible when compared to others.
