Urushie Definition

The word 'Urushie' literally means 'lacquer picture'. It is one of the oldest Japanese artworks.  This decorative artwork involves two types of paintings: one which used actual lacquer for the painting, and the other which used woodblock printing using regular ink. The wood block printing style resembles the thickness and darkness of black lacquer.
