Torii Definition

Torri refers to a traditional Japanese gate found at the entrance of or within a Shinto shrine and Japanese Buddhist temples. It is used to mark the entrance to a sacred place. Traditionally, these structures were made from wood or stone. In these modern times, it is made of reinforced concrete, copper, stainless steel or other materials. They may be painted or not. If painted, they are in vermillion with black upper lintel.
