Symbolism Definition

Symbolism refers to the movement originated in the 19th century rejecting naturalism. Though began in France its influence was felt throughout Europe. The symbolists belonged mostly to two groups – one, taking a literary approach and using icon imagery and the other taking a formal approach and using innovative colors and linear stylizations. Gustave Moreau, Odilon Redon and Gustav Klimt are considered to be representative artists of symbolism.
