Santo Definition

The term ‘Santo’ refers to the images of saints made by santeros. The practice of making santos began in Spain and later spread to Latin America and the Caribbean. Santeros are still found in western and southwestern parts of US. The santos are generally of two types – retablo (alter screens) and bulto (statues). Retablo are two dimensional and bulto three dimensional. Santo images also include crucifijos (crucifixes), relicarios (reliquaries) and nichos (niches).
