Samplers Definition

The term ‘Sampler’ is used to refer to the needlework or embroidery done on a piece of cloth to demonstrate one’s skill and the skillful use of various stitches. Such needlework was popular achievements among the American girls of the 18th and 19th century. Samplers were of different designs and types and included motifs, decorative borders, alphabets, decorative borders, and often the name of the person who created the work and the date of creation.  Victoria and Albert Museum in London houses the earliest British dated surviving sampler.
