Planish Definition

The term planish is derived from the Latin word planus which means flat. Planish means to flatten or smoothen a surface with a heavy metal object. It is technique associated with metal work. Planishing is usually done for giving a surface smooth and shiny finish. It is usually metals that undergo planishing. Metals are planished using tools like hammer hard wood hammers, heavy rawhide, slappers and neck hammers. Metal surface to be planished is kept on a mounting hole to make it easy for the blacksmith to hit hard by hammering.
