Graffiti Definition

Graffiti refers to drawing or writing on a public wall or other surface illegally. Sometimes, writing or painting is scribbled, scratched or painted. Graffiti is synonymous with “Spraycan art” or “Subway art” because of the medium they use – spray paint in aerosol cans.  In modern times, marker pens are also used. Though defacing public or private property is considered vandalism, graffiti is considered a form of art. Keith Haring (American, 1958-1990) and Jean-Michel Basquiat (American, 1960-1988) have some of the artists respected for the graffiti works.
