Crypt Definition

The word crypt is derived from the Greek word ‘krytein’ which means to hide. From this word the word ‘kryptos’ came meaning ‘hidden’. Crypts were introduced during mid-8th century in Frankish church. It is an underground room which was found below the main apse of a church. It is a stone chamber beneath the floor of a church used as a chapel or as a burial place. It is also known as an undercroft or a catacomb.
