American Luminism Definition

American Luminism refers to period of American landscape realism painting occurring in the latter half of the 19th century. The style is characterized for its use of light, which is why the name includes the word “luminism.”  Artists that subscribed to the style used light and views of the sky to mask brush strokes, producing an uncanny realistic effect. Paintings of the style tend to appear calm and peaceful.
