Me, Mona, and Mao

This installation presents three works that play on notions of fame, originality, and the cult of personality, including a copy of the Mona Lisa, Andy Warhol's Mao, and Aaron T Stephan's Girl With a Pearl EarringTangled Process. When juxtaposed, these works ask provocative questions about the traditions of artistic copying and the celebrity of images. The context in which we see images and the history of the specific image that we are seeing profoundly influences the way we understand our visual environment and its relationship with artistic production. This installation encourages us to confront these tensions.
