September 6, 2016 - May 28, 2017 - In this exhibiton there are over 150 recent acquisitions will be on view throughout MHCAM’s ten galleries, many of which will be reinstalled for the occasion, representing the cultural and historical diversity of these remarkable gifts and Museum purchases. Highlights include an important group of Asian ceramics and sculptures dating from the 1st to the 16th century; an exquisite ca. 1530 Italian pastiglia box; a Mannerist painting depicting Judith with the head of Holofernes by Mirabello Cavalori; late-19th century American landscape photographs by Carleton Watkins and William Henry Jackson; a selection of early-20th century Native American ceramics from the Southwest; a Mende dance mask from Sierra Leone; strong examples of 20th-century documentary photography; sculptures by post-war artists Christopher Wilmarth and Kenneth Snelson; and dozens of acquisitions of global contemporary art—a recent collecting focus—including works by Mary Lee Bendolph, Sarah Charlesworth, Chuck Close, Binh Danh, Pieter Hugo, Chantal Joffe, Alec Soth, Barbara Takenaga, Lin Tianmiao, Kara Walker, and many others.
